so far we have some images that were never used for other issues of dla. these include a sweet one that scott did for something halloween-related, among other things, including some scary bone drawings from ken. i think thane was thinking about something specific for the cover, something that he intended to do last year, but couldn’t because we never got around to the halloween issue we had planned. other than that, it is all wiiide open. any ideas for other content, layout, and look & feel of the thing? i was thinking about all b&w on some nice, raggish-style paper, maybe am off-white or pale-cream color? old-style? gothic fonts? cemeteries …

jeff. sounds good. sorry about the delay in the send-back. i liked the brown paper for the other halloween issue. maybe something similar (creepy-like). maybe a random black page left blank for all the lost souls in the world. hey, i checked out the web page over at my bro’s place in spokane. looking pretty sweet on the broadband. i haven’t seen it in a while so there was quite a bit of new things to see. my complements.
gotta get some art done. toast!

scratching your head

DLa News Category News from Thursday, August 19, 2004 @ 11:18 PM

Hello, my name is Adena.

I am interested in a job. I know you must get tons of emails, but here I am being stubborn.
~I hope the subject line rings a bell…if not you are probably just left scratching your head.~

Two years ago, I started by own ‘zine. My partner and I only got a couple of issues off the ground, due to expenses. It is called The Summer Sessions, and is out of Southern Maine and NH. We centered around surfing, advertising for local music and bands, and put young local artists work amongst the pages. I love being an entrepreneur and I want to dedicate my life …

planet of apes

DLa News Category News from Wednesday, July 28, 2004 @ 8:12 AM

Heh, you did pretty well, I actually did the top left, bottom left, bottom right, and finished up the top middle one from a sketch the guy did. had to base the style on the top right and bottom middle one of the other guy. Apparently I didn’t hit it perfectly, cause most people can figure out most of which ones I did.

Yes, the stamp paper isn’t stampy enough. It is slightly yellowed on the gum side, but there is no gloss, so it almost looks like a duotone paper. Also too thin. Sucks in my opinion. Maybe the one from paper plus is more realistic. I will …

police report

DLa News Category News from Saturday, July 24, 2004 @ 10:35 AM

ay, i just read that police report on tuesday. wednesday, i swing by the cab place to see what’s up (i’ve been out of the loop for a couple of weeks) and scott happens to pulls up in the suburban. he hops out and with a smile points a gun-like-finger at me and does a little ‘bang! bang!’ what a dope.

here’s a quick stab at what happened last wednesday: stressing over life, we see scott drinking straight shots of whisky and chasing it with about 11 malt liqueurs. then, we see a stumbling drunk scott running around the neighborhood in his skivvies shooting bullets into wood piles and supposedly waving the …

dla transfer

DLa News Category News from Sunday, July 18, 2004 @ 5:57 PM

Hi Barry,

I just wanted you to know that we finally got our own server space and will no longer be leeching off of your generous server services.

I also want to thank you on behalf of everyone here at DLa — Thank you so much for helping us with everything you’ve done. Without your help, our website(s) would not have been possible.

Well, that’s about it, then, I guess. Please feel free to delete all DLa files from your server and please let us know if we can ever do anything for you. Thanks again.

Best Regards,

Jeff (and Co.)

Re: surprise!

DLa News Category News from Saturday, July 17, 2004 @ 7:10 PM

i think we should start hosting with whomever you’d prefer. mediatemple is fine with me. no matter who we choose we will have problems and benefits – the worst case scenario would be to end up with somebody like we had w/ the DLa site (xoasis), and even then, we are proficient enuf to resolve things and move someplace else. anyhow – we should start hosting immediately, and begin working on our ‘personal’ sites. this will get us back up to speed and thinking webstuff so that the process on the main & subsidiary sites will be more efficient and smooth. it also allows some website manipulations in general …

sticky stuff

DLa News Category News from Sunday, July 11, 2004 @ 6:35 PM

Hey,

either one of you guys own the dla distribution list??? I assume Jeff has this, but he said he was going on vacation and so I include you into the equation Thane, since I have no idea how long he intends to be gone. And Thane, since you are in the Portland area, I was wondering if you could do me a favor… There is a store called Paper Plus down there that should have stock of a special paper I have been looking for and have only found one place to acquire it, only it is in Portland or Spokane, neither of which I intend to go to soon, so…. …

pretty interesting site – nice graphics and layout, very simplistic. his ‘portfolio’ is pretty meager, but nice quality and packaged well.

the comix cafe:
hmm.. cannot decide. i rather enjoyed it for a while when i was there, sketching and listening to some very interesting music. i think it would be a sweet spot to chill in the early evening sometime. there were some talented cartoonists there, and i saw some pretty wicked ‘jams’ [ie= collaborative work] in a couple sketchbooks. overall, a lot of the people rub me the wrong way and as i left [as last time] the few people i thot were interesting failed to …

future?

DLa News Category News from Tuesday, July 06, 2004 @ 4:27 PM

So, I finally got graduated, and was looking forward to getting back into the DLA thing, but I noticed the site has been down for quite a while and you guys moved down south, and I am just wondering, what are your plans for the future of DLA? Is there a future of DLA? I am sure you have talked about it before your moving and all, so fill me in. From the outside it looks like DLA has dissipated. I would like to get back on the inside of things now that my life is semi-normal once again.

Drop me a line if you are all settled and feel like …

to DLa … and back again!

DLa News Category News from Monday, July 05, 2004 @ 4:55 PM

Hi Barry,

sorry for the lack of contact — we just finished a family move to the vancouver, wa area. i quit my job, and packed up the wife and kids and just headed out on the highway. i just had to get out of moses hole. so everything was turned upside down there for awhile. all in all, it was a crazy move, but hopefully well worth it..

anyway, dla was also out-of-business there for awhile, but now that we are finally settled and re-focusing art, we are getting things up and running once again, which is why i’m here — to see what’s up.

i got your messages, and went …
