pretty interesting site – nice graphics and layout, very simplistic. his ‘portfolio’ is pretty meager, but nice quality and packaged well.
the comix cafe:
hmm.. cannot decide. i rather enjoyed it for a while when i was there, sketching and listening to some very interesting music. i think it would be a sweet spot to chill in the early evening sometime. there were some talented cartoonists there, and i saw some pretty wicked ‘jams’ [ie= collaborative work] in a couple sketchbooks. overall, a lot of the people rub me the wrong way and as i left [as last time] the few people i thot were interesting failed to balance it out, so on the way home i was almost upset for having gone {there is a small amount of cliqueishness, which makes me feel queasy}. i think i will go one more time though, and maybe i will find it was only that i was in the wrong frame of mind.
anyhow.. it is growing late now.

thanks for the link — i liked the print items (most of them), but there wasn’t much else there — overall, the site seemed fresh, but too amateurish to be taken seriously…
i am so wondering what music you were listening to at the cafe that i want to go next week just to find out…
as for the cartoon heads, i imagine a scene very similar to what i experienced while hanging out in seattle comic shops — like those d&d clowns who know everything, and all the “i-know-way-more-about-comix-than-you-do” banter. i’m not sure if the reward of going (comic art & drawing, etc.) would be worth the cliquishness of it all, though. i am interested to hear more about your experience there..

i shoud have asked the bartender what music he was pumping out when the evening started.. (he switched to something completely different, i think Fugazi, and it was too loud and annoying later on.. i think he was trying to put something on he thot more people would like. also he was playing some Marley) — the original music was some kind of old jazz/blues with some digital hiphop f/x that trailed in and out once in a while. i dont know.. i have been out of the music ‘scene’ so long i have no idea what is out there.
you are more or less on the right track in your estimation of the comix cafe, i will tell you about it next time we get together. also i got response back from ken – he sent me his website link and yasuko’s. i will prob check it out in a bit here and see what is so amazing. he was baiting me a little, trying to get some info from me on what is going on with DLa – he said he had some ”plans” for it, which he was discussing with you… i think i will stick to avoiding the subject for now and see if ken will move on to something more alive & interesting.
good luck job hunting. shoot one back at me.. i will check again this afternoon probably, i have class this evening tho.

the music isn’t such a big deal, other than the fact that you found it interesting. as far as music goes, it must be worth checking out if you found some value in it. cafe news later..
as far as kenneth paul schrag design and yasuko design go, we have a long way to go before we are that well-packaged. i am sure they are both hosted for free via barry schrag, plus they have had two years to do nothing but pet cats and do art. after checking out his website, i am both inspired and frustrated. inspired to go off, choose my own ground, and do well, but at the same time frustrated that, even after all this time doing art, thinking about art, and planning stuff, i have so little output to show for it. but all that will soon change…
…right?
