Re: dla website

DLa News News from Sunday, March 14, 2004 @ 7:21 PM

Barry,

how are things looking../?

i was thinking, that if the security stuff can’t be resolved without too much trouble, we would be much more than grateful to go back to how things were before the whole ‘dlamembers’ ftp stuff happened..

just a thought…

Jeff

Is deadletterart working now? I get red x’s on images…

I am not sure whether it is working or not.

deadletterart.com is missing images in some areas, and thane’s new website doesn’t show up at all (www.deadletterart.com/thane/index.html).

also, ftp will allow us to view certain folders, but not move or copy any of them…

i have a new site almost ready to replace the current one. it would be cool to get the dlamembers ftp working, but it is not essential… (it would be cool, though) the new site is much, much smaller and way more streamlined (all html)..

i will check my email again in awhile, just in case…

Ok: All sorts of problems. Could be disk corruption or a virus I dont know, and can get on the machine to see since TS is not working, and I am not in ML

What I did was copy the Deadletterart directory to a holding spot, and created a new as the website. I then tried to copy each directory and noted the ones which would not copy. Some files may have copied on the ones I list, and some did not. Here they are. Some of these files said they were in use, but that is impossible because I stopped the webservice and FTP before going forward… That indicates a real problem.

Directories that did not copy were:
Images
Submissions
Neo2003
Thane

Files in the root directory were the following Mr Lister (I removed this entirely because I suspect its not supposed to be there. Another user does use Mr Lister, and I think it was put there by the program a long time ago before we had directory security… maybe 2 years ago) drama_bkg.gif

Now, go ahead and update your site, and we will go to the next step from there.

is it safe to upload the new site?

i mean, you mentioned some serious-sounding probs, and i don’t want to mess anything up..

however, ‘deadletterart.com’ http and ftp both seem fine. (aside from the missing images and folders) so i am going to remove everything from the ‘deadletterart.com’ and begin uploading the new structure (hopefully tonight as well).

what about ‘dlamembers.com’ FTP?
should i link to that or not?

As long as you upload your stuff, and it works, we will go forward.

Once you have that, give me a list of each thing you want and I will make the change, and let you test to see if I affected the other site. Lets get DLA back up and working again first. Let me know when you get it uploaded.

sounds good.

i just removed everything from ‘deadletterart.com’, except for a ‘default.htm’ file and the ‘dlamembers’ directory, which also has a ‘default.htm’ file. — all FTP went smoothly.

i then checked ‘deadletterart.com’ (default.htm) online and it worked fine. so everything ‘deadletterart’-related seems to work as it did before, which is great!

i will be finishing the new website tonight (hopefully), and will upload it tonight or tomorrow afternoon.

i will send email when ‘deadletterart.com’ is up (and working).

Just set dlamembers to point to that directory. The correct page comes up when I hit each of the sites… good for now.

i am uploading the new site, it should be active in 30 mins or so.. it turned out to be bigger than 15 mb — i forgot about an 8 mb movie file that’s in there, too… so total size is less tha 22 mb (the old site was around 100 mb, i think..). thanks again for hosting us!

ok I realize now that what I did may be incorrect… I pointed the dlamembers site to the dlamembers directory. Since you didn’t put anything in there, I was thinking that you might not have wanted me to do that?

Just let me know which directory you want me to point the http://www.dlamembers.com site to.

we only need dlamembers.com for the FTP access.. (we may use it later for http, but for now, just FTP).

we were trying to establish a unique user id and password for http://ftp.dlamembers.com , so that guests could collaborate and submit art online, without having access to anything else.

the key thing is that we only want guest-FTP folks to have access to the ‘dlamembers’ folder, but to nothing above it.

so its location is up to you…

It looks like I am locked out of my own servers… I have a small problem with terminal services licensing, and I have to be there to reset it. I have to get someone who knows the system to reset it, so it may be a few days…

Sorry

no worries! — the new website is up and running, and everything seems okay with deadletterart ftp — so waiting a while for dlamembers ftp is no problem..

i (and everyone else) really appreciate all your help with our cause — thank you!!

have a great weekend,

Getting someone to go over and reset the servers, so I will be able to get in after tonight.

Now what user ID and pwd are you using to get into the dlamembers ftp directory? Just so I am sure I am doing the same thing.

And what FTP program are you using? I am using IE6

dlamembers.com >
un = 'dlamembers' / pw = '********'

i am uploading/downloading with maxFTP (i could send it? — it’s about 5MB..), but I also check FTP activity via IE6.

if you do get the unique dlamembers password working, would it be possible to set the upload/download size limit to 10 or 15 MB? (some of the art files are large .psd files…)

Ok, I just got a job yesterday, so I am a little slow…

Can you put the maxFTP out on the DLA site somewhere so I can download it?

Congrats on the job!

i uploaded maxFTP into the /dlamembers subdirectory.. if i remember correctly, it is freeware, so you shouldn’t need a password. i have been using it since 2001..

– never a problem!

Jeff, I totally rebuilt the server, using 2003 now, but there seems to be no way to set permissions so that one can log in and not move around in FTP. I know this sounds like an easy thing, but I just have not found out how to do it. If you come across anything that tells how, let me know and we will try it. I think its hard because we are all homing to one IP address. It seems to need more than one to do that with FTP. Since we have a simple LinkSys router, it only takes one IP.
