Barry,

Hi, this is Jeff. I was wondering if it would be possible to set a unique FTP password for non-member DLA art-contributors.

Currently, Thane, Ken, and myself are the only ones (other than yourself) with access to the entire DLA website, and we want to keep it that way…

Is it possible to set a unique password for a specific folder (or directory) that is isolated from everything else, so that a few other folks could join in and share files via FTP via DLA via the extremely generous Barry Schrag?

Thank you.

Regards,
Jeff Starr

We lost a server due to a fan problem (again), I think it was the mail server, Ill look into the directory thing tomorrow night.

I am at work now, so if I forget, ping me in 2 days.

Thanks!

Ok, I tried it, and here is the deal.

If there is a website with a named virtual directory, and there is a user with that name i.e. deadletterart, then the ftp user with using that name will be directed right to the website with that name.

I tried others and they don’t go to the directory, but instead go to the root directory (that’s bad for security) That means that if you want a guest account or something like deadletterartguest, we can make a directory anywhere on that machine including one under your dearletterart directory, and get that user name only “deadletterartguest” to go right to it.

That is the problem, unless there is a domain that is registered for that “www.deadletterartguest.com”, so the user can go to ftp://deadletterartguest.com there is no way that we can do it.

If you want to register that name (maybe you can do this free now, I know it was down to $9.99 last year), I would be happy to set up the rest.

Sorry its no easier than that. If you get more info about another way to do it on Win2k Server, let me know!

That is actually not so bad…

I don’t mind registering a guest domain name, at least for a year, as a trial run.

So, if I purchase, say, “dlaguest.com”, what are the domain name server addresses that I should use?

Currently, “deadletterart.com” lists the following:

ns1.dnsexit.com (as primary)
ns2.dnsexit.com (as secondary)

And, actually, I already tried to register “dlaguest.com” using the above server addresses, but was informed that “connection to the socket failed”.

I assume that that has something to do with the DNS settings?

How should I proceed with all this?
