News from Friday, December 20, 2002 @ 4:50 PMJust between you and me, DLa has become a burden. I am tired (exhausted, really) of trying so hard to keep it afloat. The DLa update email was intended to let careful readers see that I have had enuf of playing the role I was playing and feel serious change is essential to any kind of future DLa activity. And, the email was intended to convey all of that without sounding like I was closing down the business, for heaven’s sake (which the next email would have refuted anywayz). I refuse to put in the kind of time I was putting into DLa without equal (or even some, or any) contribution from everybody else. Frankly, I am very inspired these days and the DLapathy that everyone (save maybe you and chris) reeks of lately is only bringing me down. And so I am cutting the chords and setting it free. having said that, I will try to address some of your concerns in green below…
??huhr?
there is a lot of explanation about what DLA is NOT doing or becoming, but what exactly IS it in terms of this new direction?
hopefully something less busy, less pretentious, less stress, less apathy, less formal… but who can say for sure — it IS what it IS and will be what we put into it, I guess…
a free publication that nobody is taking responsibility to put together and nobody is obligated to submit anything to, either because they do not know what is going on or because there is no deadline? i need more explanation of how this might work.
that’s the whole point — I am NO LONGER calling the shots on how these things might work. So, if you feel that you have the inclination to take over and enforce your own agenda, then just say so… As for the next issue, that is in the werx and is going to be very low-key and little stress. If you want to change that for the next issue, then sweet. that is how it should be. Since I am doing the layout and cover (among many other things) for the next issue, and because it is something that seems to be happening without us fighting it, it seems meant to be and so I am going with it…
are you proposing that anybody who feels like it start a DLa project and use whatever pooled money, or perhaps only their own, to get it rolling – and if anybody else feels like it, jump on board? or if i wanted to do a DLa project would i try to task out work to other people (for example: i am putting together an "art appreciation" kit, and i want a sculpture from scot, an essay from jeff, ron’s newspaper interview, and some commercial illustrations from chris) and hope that everyone goes for my idea?
I am not "proposing" anything. Thus, ANY of your ideas are possible (and interesting, I might add) happenings for future projects (not just zinez)… Again, for now, the only thing I feel like doing is the next issue — simple, clean, and fun. Sorry if this is too simplistic for you. Maybe that’s the whole point — I am no longer inspired to spend so much time with my head into DLa because I would rather think (and do) ART.
these are serious questions for me, and i want to know what the nature of our association with each other might be without any direction (other than doing art, for its own sake) to guide our efforts as a group, or in collaboration…?
Another point. I feel the current state of affairs reflects a profound need for each of us to delve individually into our own art without having to worry about who is doing what by when for whom because the next deadline is zooming in close… WE need some time to grow as individual artists and also time to put business down and grow our friendships stronger — not milk DLa fame for every last drop of glory and strangle it until it is dead and gone. I feel that if we spend the time to grow OUTSIDE of DLa (and more as just friends — remember days when we could just hang as friends with no agendas?) while letting DLa follow along loosely, then when we dive back into it, DLa will be all the more worthwhile and tuff. See. I am doing the things I am doing with POSITIVE intentions only. So relax, compadre.
there is nothing to stop me from doing art on my own, and even printing and sharing it with others, but why would i need to be part of a group?
see above (or remember that we are all supposed to be friends) if we are just about doing our own thing, and sharing the product as it arises – is the plan to just post our stuff on the web for each other to view and absorb? uh. huh?
if i misunderstand what is going on, it is only because i do not have all of the information (yet) that i need to assess the situation. so if any of my questions are in error, please let me know (or answer them.) (this is MUCH better, and I TRULY appreciate your efforts at cordiality.) this email is getting long…
about dla16: i assume jeff, you are doing the layout. yes. and it is being printed in ML. yes. i assume the cover is color no. b/w on card stock (as discussed with chris while you were sitting with us at sporty’s), as in the past. indeed. and as the dimensions of the zine are square [roughly] then so should be the quarter of mask agin, you do your quarter ANY way your heart desires (rulez iz rulez!). <<< i also have a bunch of images i will post into a folder of the DLa site and email a link to you all. the images are copyrighted so i wont put a link on the site to them. Inspire… >>>
also jeff: how many pages are you expecting so far in the next zine? fewer than more (but who knowz this soon? and if i find many more pieces of collaboration, would you prefer to place the images – or should i lay them out however and send them to you?? I am doing the layout on this one, but if you have something specifically bad-ass, let me know soon. I have a strong vision that I am going for on this one.. so I gots to be selfish (sorry).. you simply MUST do the next one!
no need for foam cars I love it! – this email is intended for informational purposes only. just relax and reply.
Aye, Capitan..
I gave it me best
