theme of pop/sketch? ironic combination of elements:
on one hand there is the sketch – the most truly expressive creation an artist ever realizes. a memo to one’s self, from the depths of the mind. personal. full of rich imagination. the other – popular culture; dead. mainstream. devoid of life or imagination, a tasty bite of cotton candy that infatuates and destroys the senses.
this combination hits really on what "pop art" was all about – the irony of mass marketing things for people to personally enjoy. in this vein, the way i see the layout is presenting those things from our sketchbooks in a way that captures the essence of sketching and what it means to us as artists and turning it around a bit and distancing the viewer from really being "in" the sketchbook.
so as you flip throught the zine you are presented with sketches and bits of information, and in the background you can see the sketch pages of the "book" you are looking at — only you never really see anything on the actual sketch pages themselves. you see sketches presented on all sorts of alternate media (book pages, magazine layouts, napkins, receipts, bookmarks, margins of exams, notebook paper, etc..) – and these alternate medias are resting on top of the blank sketchbook pages through which you, the viewer, flips.
my idea was to use one sketchbook throughout to give the zine more continuity, but chris (yeh, you [Nimbus]!) presented a pretty tuff layout – and it is strong enough it made me think that maybe each of us should use a unique sketchbook in the background to represent individual work. (so [Nimbus] – your page would be used as originally presented rather than slapped on top of an additional sketch page background.)
we need to make a decision by the end of monday – because [Nimbus] is ready to roll, and needs to know one way or another. ([Nimbus] – please partake in the discussion!) either way i think this next issue is going to BE THE FATTEST ASSKICKING ISSUE EVER!!
anyhow, let me know whats up. (i didnt spend any time at all on the sample pics attached – so dont let my poor craftsmanship of these turds affect your judgement!)
