site concerns

DLa News News from Wednesday, August 01, 2001 @ 1:23 AM

After only marginal success with the new server, I must say that I am, well, uncomfortable at the idea of experiencing so many problems (perhaps small ones) with your brother’s server. for example, I am unable to successfully "work" the FTP files, and STILL cannot bring up the website in any browser. so I feel the need to express my concerns. this in no way is meant to put down anybody (especially a brother, for goodness sakes), I just really feel the need to get something more (much more) stable when it comes to serving up hot digital DLa online. that is, I think that I still have a wee bit of patience left to spend on the transfer, but i think it would be in all our interests to find a more stable server (thus far, the overall pattern has NOT been reassuring). I hope you can see objectivity in these ideas. either way, it is a group decision we all need to make. I am merely priming the discussion. let me know what YOU think (and don’t tell me to be patient again, or I will be forced to kill you slowly) about all this. see you thursday at a place and time yet to be determined.

There can be only one

Ok, I won’t tell you to be patient, but here is the response from my latest mail to my brother about the site being down.

"Its back up now, possibly an unfortunate press of the delete key by one of my proteges? Anyway all is well now. I will be installing my site reporting and monitoring system (SRMS). This will check the website every 5 minutes and send a page to my pager with an error report if it cannot connect to deadletterart.com! How does that sound? 24x7x365 up time!"

If you think about it, how many problems have we had with the site?

1. The transfer took a while. No transfer is instantaneous. Even in our company, it takes upwards of 3 days of downtime. Remember, it was free, too.

2. The ftp had to be figured out. So this was the first time my brother had ever hosted more than one site, and he didn’t realize he only has one FTP site, which he had to configure for everyone to access. You should have no problem accessing it now with your remote directory as deadletterart. I have no problems, and Thane seems to have had no problems uploading Bleeding’s gallery. If you still have problems, contact me.

3. The site went down Momentarily. Please understand, Jeff, that servers do go down, in any company, and windows servers are less reliable than, say Unix servers which are much more costly (we can’t afford it in other words). Our company hosts over 30,000 sites in US and Japan, and they go down constantly, the upside is the response time in getting them back up. We have direct access to my brother with quick turnaround time. (compare to X-hole if you like) However, the site being down had nothing to do with the stability of the server. He is running 2000 servers, and he only has 3 websites. Compare that to other companies running NT and having hundreds of websites. THEY have the problems with stability.

Part of the reason it took so long to get back up was, I didn’t know of it right off, and when I did finally get around to e-mailing my brother, I sent it to his home address, which he only checks in the evenings after work, my bad. If you really want, I can give you and Thane my brothers e-mail address, and you can contact him directly with any problems, real time. He gets around to things quickly, trust me. Not that we will really need to contact him after he gets his SRMS up. I am still quite optimistic. This all seems to be simple setup problems. I don’t see what kind of problems could occur from this point on that wouldn’t happen elswhere as well. Tell me your thoughts, or we can discuss them tonight.

If you are still so uncomfortable with the idea of being hosted on the current server, I suggest you go scope out some prices of web hosting and bring some quotes to our meeting. I will be happy to discuss other options with you and Thane. I don’t want to end up with bad feelings toward my family or anything, so if that is the way we should go, then I have no major arguments except for the money. Although my brother only pays 25 for additional sites, he pays over 100 for his own, and that is dirt cheap in itself. Our company here offers 100 a year (20MB) only to its employees. That is rock bottom. If you can find better, more power to ya.
